Toyota Mirai Model Years

The Toyota Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) marketed as a midsize sedan by Toyota. The Mirai was unveiled in 2014. With its starting price of over $58,000 in the US for the 2016 model year, it is positioned as a luxury midsize car. It’s also considered as the very first FCV to enter mass production and become commercially available.

The Toyota Mirai features a fuel cell system based on the Toyota FCV concept car, offering an output power density of 3.0 kW per liter, for a total output of over 100 kW. The 2016 Toyota Mirai managed to get to 151 hp and 247 pound-feet of torque. The FCV fuel cell system uses a proprietary, small, and lightweight fuel cell stack and two 70-MPa high-pressure hydrogen tanks placed beneath the vehicle’s body. The Mirai relies on an AC synchronous electric generator that converts the hydrogen gas into electricity. An electric motor is set in motion, producing the output power. With the 2024 Toyota Mirai, total output came to 182 hp and 221 pound-feet of torque. Transmission is a 1-speed automatic. XLE and Limited trims have been offered since 2021. The 2024 Toyota Mirai XLE already includes a 12-3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia with a 14-speaker JBL sound system. For the interior, front and rear seats are also heated and ventilated, with a perforated SofTex seat trim.

Where Do You Fill a Toyota Mirai?

Refueling a Toyota Mirai is similar to filling up a traditional gas-powered vehicle. In a hydrogen fueling station, there’s also a pump and a nozzle. As you pump in the hydrogen, it travels into carbon fiber reinforced fuel tanks. Refueling typically lasts five minutes. In terms of cost, filling an empty tank costs an average of $200, with hydrogen costing $27 per kg. In many cases, Toyota also offers complimentary fuel for purchases and leases. The usual offer is $15,000 worth of hydrogen fuel or free fuel for 3 to 6 years. Considering a top-tier fuel economy of 65 MPGe and range of as much as 402 miles, then it’s definitely worth trying out.
